The story

Organic downtempo is the sound of the sampler growing a band, beat music made warm with real instruments and real hands.

Bonobo is the template: jazz, soul and folk samples laid over hip-hop tempos, then gradually replaced by a live ensemble across his career.

The sound of the sampler growing a band.

Tycho took it sunlit and melodic; Emancipator laced it with strings; Quantic took it around the world.

It's downtempo at its most accessible, groove-forward, melodic, and built to be heard on good speakers with the windows open.

The Bonobo lineage

Bonobo is the figure most associated with the style. Across records like “Black Sands” he built lush, sample-and-session-musician hybrids that move with real swing, and his success opened the door for a wave of like-minded producers. Emancipator brought a pastoral, string-laden version from the American Northwest; Tycho added a bright, krautrock-tinged shimmer; Mr. Scruff and Quantic carried the crate-digger’s love of funk, soul, and global rhythm into the downtempo tempo range.

Built for long listens

The defining quality is groove without urgency. These tracks have a clear beat you can nod to, but they are built for headphones and long listens rather than the dancefloor, and they age well because the playing is genuine. Many of these artists self-release or work with independent labels, so Bandcamp is the natural home for the deep cuts and live recordings. Start with the three records below, then explore the remix and collaboration trails, which lead outward into nu-jazz, broken beat, and the warmer end of house.
